Septic Warning Signs You Should Not Ignore

Changes inside the house and around the yard can be reasons to arrange an evaluation.

A septic problem may first appear as something small: a drain that slows repeatedly, gurgling in the plumbing, or an odor that keeps returning. Outside, persistent wet spots near the system, sewage odors, or unusually lush, spongy grass during dry conditions can also be warning signs. Sewage backing up into the home needs prompt attention. These symptoms are reasons to investigate, not enough information to diagnose one specific failed component.

When you call for service, describe what is happening and when it began. Explain whether one fixture is affected or several, whether the issue changes after heavy water use or rainfall, and whether there has been recent work on the property. Have maintenance records available if you can. That information helps the service provider begin with the facts instead of a guessed repair.

Keep people and pets away from suspected sewage at the surface. Do not open a tank, enter an excavation, or handle electrical septic equipment in an attempt to identify the problem. Reduce avoidable wastewater use while arranging help if drainage or backup is occurring, and follow the service provider's instructions.

If the system has an alarm, note what you observe and consult the instructions for the installed equipment while arranging service. Do not silence a recurring warning and assume the cause has disappeared. Tell the provider about the warning and any changes in use or power supply, without opening electrical controls yourself. Accurate observations help the evaluation begin with the actual symptoms and the equipment present on the property.

Do not assume a chemical product or a routine pump-out will solve every symptom. The response needs to match the cause. Call J&L Underground Construction at (417) 456-0551 to discuss septic concerns and the next step for evaluating your system.
