Calling 811 and Locating Private Lines Are Not the Same Thing

Understand which buried services are covered before excavation begins.

Contacting 811 is a necessary part of planning digging work, but property owners should also understand privately owned lines. The 811 process notifies participating utility operators so their facilities can be addressed. Owner-installed services may fall outside those operators' locating responsibilities. The important distinction is ownership and the actual service arrangement—not simply whether a line is under a private yard.

A property may have electrical service to a detached shop, a water line to another building, irrigation, or other private connections. Tell the project team about these features before digging. Ask which services will be addressed through the 811 process and which need additional private locating. Do not assume that a completed utility response means every buried line on the property has been identified.

Existing records can help describe the site. Gather drawings, installation photos, and information about additions made by earlier owners. They provide useful context, but current locating and excavation requirements still apply. If ownership or the coverage of a locate is unclear, resolve it before work proceeds in that area.

Ask how the locate relates to the limits of the proposed project. A private locate arranged for one work area should not be assumed to address the entire property or every future excavation. If the plan expands, tell the responsible team before digging in the new area. Clear limits help everyone understand which information has been requested and which questions remain, instead of treating locating as a one-time clearance for any work on the site.

The goal is a clear plan for the services that actually share the dig site. Call J&L Underground Construction at (417) 456-0551 to discuss private utility locating and the information needed before trenching, fence installation, grading, or another excavation project begins.
